ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Building on the success of previous editions, OrBItaly 2026 will bring together the Italian and international community working in the field of bioelectronics, with a special focus on organic materials and devices.

The conference will offer an inspiring forum for the presentation of recent advances and emerging directions at the interface of electronics, photonics, materials science and the life sciences.

It will also promote discussion, exchange of ideas and new scientific collaborations across disciplines.

Fabio Cicoira, Ph.D., FRSC, is a Full Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Chemistry from the University of Bologna and earned his Ph.D. in Microengineering from the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). His research explores how soft, adaptive, and sustainable materials can redefine the way electronics interface with living systems and the physical world. By merging concepts from polymer chemistry, electrochemistry, and micro- and device engineering, Prof. Cicoira develops flexible, stretchable, and self-healing electronic materials and systems, particularly organic bioelectronics and organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs), that are mechanically compliant, resilient, and intrinsically compatible with biological environments. He is a recipient of the prestigious Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowship (European Union, 2007–2010) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). Prof. Cicoira leads interdisciplinary research aimed at enabling long-term, repairable, and environmentally responsible electronic technologies for healthcare, wearable systems, and next-generation soft and flexible electronics.

Manuela Melucci, PhD in Organic Chemistry, is currently Director of the Institute for Organic Synthesis and Photoreactivity (ISOF) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). Her research focuses on the design and synthesis of innovative molecular, 2D, and composite materials for environmental and biomedical applications, with particular emphasis on thiophene based- and graphene oxide based- functional platform. She is the author of more than 130 peer-reviewed publications, 9 international patent families, and co-developer of Graphisulfone®, an innovative water purification technology commercialized with Medica S.p.A. She has coordinated several national and European research projects, including Graphil, LIFE REMEMBRANCE, and EDF S.W.I.F.T., and actively contributes to European expert groups on water technologies and 2D material standardization. In 2024, she received the Italian Chemical Society Award for Organic Chemistry for the Environment, Energy and Nanosciences.

Paolo Lugli graduated in Physics at the University of Modena, Italy, in 1979. In 1981 he joined Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, where he received his Master of Science in 1982 and his Ph.D. in 1985, both in Electrical Engineering. From 1988 to 1993 he was Associate Professor of “Solid State Physics” at the “Engineering Faculty” of the 2nd University of Rome “Tor Vergata”. In 1993 he was appointed as Full Professor of “Optoelectronics” at the same University. In 2002 he joined the Technical University of Munich where he was appointed head of the newly created Institute for Nanoelectronics. From 2015 to 2016 he was Dean of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at TUM. From 2017 to 2024 he was Rector of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano in Bolzano, Italy. His current research interests involve printed electronics, nanoimprint lithography, the modeling, fabrication and characterization of organic devices for electronics and optoelectronics applications, the design of circuits and architectures for nanostructures and nanodevices, the numerical simulation of microwave semiconductor devices, and the theoretical study of transport processes in nanostructures. He is author of more than 550 scientific papers and co-author of the books "The Monte Carlo Modelling for Semiconductor Device Simulations" (Springer, 1989) and “High Speed Optical Communications“ (Kluver Academic, 1999). He served as General Chairman of the IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology held in Munich in 2004 and as Program Chair of the same conference held in Rome in 2015. He is IEEE Fellow and member of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering (ACATECH).

Paolo A. Netti is Full Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Naples Federico II and Director of the CABHC (Center for Advanced Biomaterials for Health Care, IIT@CRIB). A pioneer in biomaterials, tissue engineering, and nanomedicine, his research has contributed to redefining biomaterials as dynamic instructive systems capable of directing biological responses. His current work focuses on biofabrication, bioelectronic interfaces, and engineered human tissues for regenerative medicine and biohybrid robotics. He has held several national and European leadership roles, including service as an ERC panel member. He is author of more than 500 scientific publications and 30 patents, and has served as President of the Italian National Group of Bioengineering (GNB) since 2021.

Wolfgang Knoll earned a PhD degree in Biophysics from the University of Konstanz in 1976. From 1993 to 2008 he was the director of the Materials Science Department at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, Germany, was from 2008 to 2023 the Scientific Managing Director of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology in Vienna, Austria, and works as a Honorary Professor at DPU since 2020. Since 2010 he is a Regular Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, received in 2012 an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Twente, the Netherlands, and became a member of the Academia Europaea in 2017.

Athanassia Athanassiou is a Principal Investigator at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Genoa, Italy, where she leads the Smart Materials Group. She also serves as Associate Director of IIT for the Nanomaterials Domain, while in August 2025 she became Vice Scientific Director of the Institute. She earned her degree in Physics from the University of Ioannina, Greece, an MSc in Laser Photonics from the University of Manchester, UK, and a Ph.D. in Physics, fully supported by British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL), from the University of Salford, UK (2000). From 2000 to 2003, she was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Foundation for Research and Technology–Hellas (FORTH), Crete, Greece, and from 2003 to 2005 she served both as a Collaborating Researcher at FORTH and as Academic Staff at the Technical University of Crete, School of Applied Technology. In January 2006, she joined as Researcher the National Nanotechnology Laboratory, CNR–Istituto di Nanoscienze, Lecce, Italy. In January 2011, she moved to the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, IIT @ UniLe (Lecce), where she established the Smart Materials Group. In September 2012, the group relocated to IIT’s central research laboratories in Genoa. She was awarded tenure in September 2014 and has since led the Smart Materials Group, an interdisciplinary team of approximately 40 researchers developing sustainable materials and technologies for environmental and human health applications. Since 2022, she is President of the Scientific Committee of the Competence Centre for Economic, Ecological, and Social Sustainability at the Free University of Bozen–Bolzano. She is the founder and Scientific Advisor of Alkivio (established in July 2022), a startup focused on circular economy innovation, specializing in the development of biocomposites from paper residues for applications spanning construction, design, food, medicine and electronics. She is the author of around 500 peer-reviewed journal articles, numerous book chapters, and has served as a scientific editor. She holds an extensive patent portfolio. Over the past ten years, her group has participated in 10 EU-funded projects, 9 institutional projects, 44 industrial projects with national and international companies, and has established two joint laboratories with industrial partners.

Dr. Fabrizio Torricelli is a Full Professor at the University of Brescia. His research interests include neuromorphic biosensing, bioelectronics, biosensors, physical and numerical modeling, additive manufacturing technologies, organic electrochemical transistors, electrolyte-gated transistors, neuromorphic in-liquid sensing, and organic artificial neurons.

Henrique Leonel Gomes is Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Coimbra University, Coimbra, Portugal. He heads the Organic Electronics and Bioelectronics research group. He was awarded BSc in Physics from the Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal and a PhD in Electronic Engineering in 1994 from the University of Wales, Bangor. His research interests have been directed towards the electrical characterisation of electronic devices such as field effect transistors, diodes and capacitor structures. He has a recognized experience in small signal impedance measurement techniques. In the field of organic electronics, key contributions include (i) studies of gate bias stress in organic transistors, (ii) systematic investigation of polymer Schottky diodes and understanding their ac small signal response through equivalent circuit modelling, (iii) studies of resistive switching on polymer-based memory devices (plastic-RRAMs). Currently, his research team is focused on measuring the bioelectrical signals generated by ensembles of non-electrogenic (non-excitable) cells. This form of bioelectrical signaling occurs at millihertz frequencies. Understanding this ultra-low-frequency communication between cells is important not only from a fundamental perspective, as it provides insights into how cells coordinate to form tissues and organs, but also from an applied perspective. This research has significant implications for the development of bioelectronic devices for skin repair and regeneration, as well as for advancing our understanding of the bioelectric properties of cancer cells.

Claudia Cea

Claudia Cea is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Yale University. She received her B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pisa and her M.Sc. in Bioengineering from San Diego State University, where she worked on origami-based neural probes for epidural and intracortical neural recording and neurotransmitter detection. She then earned her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, where she developed soft bioelectronic devices based on organic electrochemical transistors for recording neural activity. During her Ph.D., she developed the first fully flexible, standalone bioelectronic devices that integrated sensing, signal processing, power, and data transmission into a single soft, biocompatible platform for high-resolution electrophysiological recordings. For this work, she was recognized as one of the MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35. She then completed her postdoctoral training at MIT, where she developed soft bioelectronic devices to study the gut–brain axis. At Yale, her research focuses on developing soft bioelectronic technologies that combine electrical, chemical, and optical sensing and stimulation to study communication between the nervous system and peripheral organs and to develop new approaches for diagnosing and treating disease.

Davide Blasi received his M.Sc. degree in Materials Science and Technology from the University of Bari, Italy. In 2014, he was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) Ph.D. fellowship at the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC), under the supervision of Prof. Jaume Veciana, where he studied the luminescent properties of persistent organic radicals and their application in biosensing. After a period in industry, he returned to the University of Bari in 2019 to join the group of Prof. Luisa Torsi. In 2021, he was appointed Junior Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry in the group of Prof. Gianluca Farinola. In 2023, he received the Young Researcher Award from the Organic Chemistry Division of the Italian Chemical Society for his contributions to the study of open-shell emitters. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry and his research focuses on multifunctional radical- and polyradical-based materials for optoelectronic and spintronic applications.

Filippo Bonafè

Filippo Bonafè is a tenure-track assistant professor at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Bologna and a Marie Curie postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Biosystem Science and Engineering of ETH Zurich. He is a physicist working at the interface of organic bioelectronics, materials science, and device design and characterization. His research focuses on organic mixed ionic–electronic conductors, organic electrochemical transistors, and soft interfaces for biosensing. He combines microfabrication, electrochemical and electrical characterization, impedance spectroscopy, and scanning probe techniques to study ion transport, electroswelling, and charge transport in conducting polymers. His ultimate goal is to establish a quantitative understanding of fundamental material processes to advance next-generation bioelectronic devices.

Luca Maiolo

Luca Maiolo received his Ph.D. in Physics in 2008 from RomaTre University in Rome, Italy. He is currently a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems of the National Research Council of Italy. His research mainly focuses on the fabrication and characterization of smart systems integrated on ultrathin flexible substrates for biomedical, aerospace, and environmental applications, with particular emphasis on sustainable processes and biopolymers. He has authored or co-authored more than 150 scientific articles in international journals, 100 presentations in international conferences and two book chapters. He serves as rapporteur for the Italian Ministries of Economic Development and of Education, University and Research within the Nanotechnologies panel. He is also a scientific expert for project evaluation for the Polish National Science Centre, the Dutch Research Council, and the European Commission. He currently serves as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, Review Editor for Frontiers in Electronics, and member of the Editorial Board of Biosensors.

Luciano Fadiga

Luciano Fadiga, MD, PhD, is Full Professor of Human Physiology at the University of Ferrara and Director of the Center for Translational Neurophysiology of Speech and Communication at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT). His research bridges foundational neuroscience and neurotechnology, spanning the motor system, the neural mechanisms of language, and the organization of human cortex. He was part of the team that discovered mirror neurons, and his studies on Broca's area have informed current models of speech and communication. In recent years, his work has increasingly focused on neural interfaces, with particular attention to organic electronics as a route toward more biocompatible, higher-fidelity recording and stimulation. The center he coordinates develops, thanks to the collaboration with Fabio Biscarini's team, conformable devices for translational and clinical applications, pursuing technologies that aim to deliver tangible benefit to severely disabled patients.

Marcello Meneghetti

Marcello Meneghetti is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Photonics Engineering, at the Technical University of Denmark. He holds a M.Sc. degree in Physics (University of Trento) and a PhD in Materials Science (University of Rennes), and during his education he developed a solid background in the synthesis and characterization of optical materials, as well as in the fabrication of optical fibers by thermal drawing process. As a member of the Neural Devices & Gas Photonics group, his main research line is currently centred around the development of advanced polymer-based multimaterial optical fibers, and their application in developing multifunctional neural interfaces, from the design stage to the in-vivo validation.

Maria Grazia Manera

Maria Grazia Manera is a Senior Researcher at CNR, where her work focuses on the development of innovative materials and technologies for optical sensing. Her research centers on nanoscale plasmonic phenomena for chemical and biological detection, exploring the resonant coupling between light and collective electron oscillations in plasmonic nanostructures, with applications in medical diagnostics, agri-food safety and environmental monitoring. Her activity spans low-cost nanofabrication techniques, including colloidal lithography, active plasmonics based on magneto-optical modulation, and theoretical modeling via the Finite Element Method (FEM). More recently, her research has moved toward single-molecule detection through field-enhanced spectroscopies, including Surface- and Tip-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS, TERS) and Plasmon-Enhanced Fluorescence (PEF), contributing to the development of next-generation biosensing platforms.

Rosaria Rinaldi

Professor Rosaria Rinaldi is a Full Professor of Condensed Matter Physics, director of University Excellence School ISUFI and Rector’s delegate for Technology Transfer at the University of Salento, where she also directs the research center in "Nanomedicine, Nanobioelectronics and Nanobiotechnology" and co-manages the Bio Open Lab facility for the CERIC-ERIC consortium. Throughout her distinguished career, she has held significant institutional roles, including serving on the Academic University Senate until 2024, acting as a member of the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) Evaluation Committee since 2019, and managing doctoral schools until 2020. She was Saxon Guest Professor at the Technical University of Dresden in 2025, where she previously held the prestigious "Eleonore Trefftz" chair. Over the last 15 years, she has coordinated or partnered in more than 30 regional, national, and EU scientific projects, and her extensive scientific impact is reflected in approximately 350 journal papers, 13 monographs, and 12 patents.

Wesley Sacher leads the Nanophotonics, Integration, and Neural Technology (NINT) Department at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics. Dr. Sacher obtained the Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto in 2015, and from 2015 to 2018, he was a postdoctoral scholar at the California Institute of Technology. For the past decade, Dr. Sacher’s research has focused on the development of silicon (Si) integrated photonics for submicrometer wavelengths (beginning with visible light and now extending into the near-infrared). He and his team are developing a fully-active, foundry-fabricated Si photonics platform for short wavelengths in addition to packaged microsystems leveraging these advances for neurotechnology, sensing, microdisplays, quantum systems, and data communication.

Antonio Facchetti is a Hightower Chair in Biopolymers at the Georgia Institute of Technology, co-founder and the Chief Technology Officer of Flexterra Corporation, an Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University, and a Guest Professor at Linkoping University. Facchetti obtained his Laurea degree in chemistry cum laude and a PhD degree in chemical sciences from the University of Milan. He has published more than 620 research articles, 15 book chapters, and holds more than 130 patents. He received the ACS Award for Creative Invention and the Giulio Natta Gold Medal of the Italian Chemical Society. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering, Italian Academy of Engineering and Technology Materials Research Society, European Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Inventors, AAAS, PMSE, Kavli, and RSC. His interests include synthesis of organic/hybrid opto-electronic/energy materials, solution processing of thin-films, semiconductor devices, bioelectronics and sustainable technologies.

Bruno Pignataro

Bruno Pignataro is Full Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Palermo. The research of his group lies at the interface of nanotechnology, biotechnology and optoelectronics, with a particular focus on functional materials, biosensors, printed biointerfaces and sustainable optoelectronic devices. His current research combines fundamental studies with the development of innovative technologies for next-generation photovoltaics and advanced sensing platforms exhibiting emergent functionalities. He has coordinated and participated in numerous national and international research projects and has authored more than 150 scientific publications. He has served on the editorial boards of different international journals and chaired seven editions of the European Young Chemist Award. At this conference, he will present functional confinement as a unifying design framework for engineering interaction regimes in bio-optoelectronic devices.

Carlo Augusto Bortolotti

Carlo Augusto Bortolotti is Associate Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. He received his PhD in Chemistry in 2006; from 2006 to 2008 he was a PostDoc at the S3 Centre (now Institute Nanoscience) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). He has been a visiting fellow at the Brandeis University, Technical University of Denmark DTU, University College London UCL, Harvard Medical School. He is been Coordinator, PI and participant in numerous European, bilateral, national and local projects. He is co-author of 110 publications on international journals. He has a background in protein electrochemistry, with a focus on electron transfer systems in biology, investigated with a combined experimental and theoretical approach. His current main research interests concern the development of organic electronics biosensors for investigation of biorecognition processes and label-free quantification of biomarkers in bodily fluids.

Dr. Francesca D'Elia is a biotechnologist specializing in the processing of smart polymers. She earned her degrees at the University of Salento and a Ph.D. from Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa. After a collaboration with NEST Competence Center on Nanotechnologies and ESAOTE S.p.A. as a research fellow, she worked as a process engineer responsible for the metrology area at Camgraphic Srl. In the meantime, she enrolled in the II-level master's in Knowledge Exchange and Impact. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Neuroelectronic Interfaces group at Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen.

Michele Di Lauro

Michele Di Lauro is a Researcher at the Center for Translational Neurophysiology of Speech and Communication, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Ferrara, Italy (IIT-CTNSC), where he works in the Organic Neuroelectronics research line since 2018, developing PEDOT:PSS-based electrolyte-gated organic transistors (EGOTs) for neural recording and neuromorphic signal processing. His work spans organic bioelectronics, in vivo electrophysiology, and translational neurotechnology, with a focus on exploiting the intrinsic ionic-electronic dynamics of organic mixed conductors as analog computational primitives. The devices he develops are involved in two Ministry of Health-authorised clinical investigations (IIT_FMOERS, IIT_BLBC) deployed across four neurosurgical centres in Italy.

Paolo Bollella is an expert in advanced biosensors and analytical electrochemistry. Since 2023, he is currently Tenure Track Assistant Professor at the University of Bari Aldo Moro. He also serves on DirectSens’s Advisory Board. He has received several prestigious awards, including the 2022 Young Researcher Award from the Italian Chemical Society, the International Award Galileo Galilei Young, and the 2023 Early Career Analytical Electrochemistry Prize. He has been a principal investigator for the REFIN project and co-PI for the Royal Society-funded International Exchanges 2022. In 2024, he is the PI for the UniBa Unit of the SPARKS project with a total budget of 3M€, including 365k€ for UniBa. In 2025, he is the PI of TASTE project funded by FIS program with a budget of 1.3M€.

Stefano Toffanin has received his PhD in Science and Engineering of Materials from the University of Padova in 2009. Since 2012 he is permanent researcher at the Institute for the Study of Nanostructured Materials (ISMN) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). Currently, he is Research Director at CNR-ISMN in Bologna and there he coordinates the activities of the Organic and Hybrid Optoelectronics research group.  He is/has been involved in 8 national and European projects as Head of the Unit, Task and Workpackage coordinator. He acted as a consultant in an industrial project for two years. He was Project Coordinator in H2020-EU-ICT Innovation Action MOLOKO project (Grant Agreement N. 780839, project end March 2022) and the H2020-EU-ICT Research and Innovation h-ALO project (Grant Agreement N. 101016706, project end June 2024). The fields of interest of his research are (i) the study of multifunctional nanostructured organic and hybrid materials for their implementation in advanced optoelectronic devices for light emission, light sensing and recently optical neuromorphic application and (ii) the engineering and integration of optoelectronic and photonic components in smart systems for biodiagnostics and biosensing. He is author of around 100 scientific peer-reviewed papers and of 4 international patents on organic electronics and biophotonics.

Convitto Palmieri is in the historic centre, in Piazzetta Giosuè Carducci. It can be reached on foot from the main central stops and nearby arrival points, and is about a six-minute walk from Lecce railway station.
